Hello!
Well today, the 2nd day of 2013, I've begun my project to do one craft a week. My first craft was crayon melting.
Instead of paying a ridiculous amount for melted crayons (although this artist makes some pretty cool creations with melted crayons), it's a simple, cheep, and fun craft to do at home. It doesn't take very many tools and it's pretty quick to do!
Difficulty level: Easy
TOOLS:
Crayons
Glue
Packing tape
A hairdryer
Canvas
A plastic sheet(s)/Newspaper/Trash bags
My apologies for the lack of photos showing my progress. I was very unorganized with the set up of this craft.
WHAT TO DO:
First, chose the crayons you're going to use. You can leave the wrappers on (I did) or take them all off.)
Optional:: Wrap packing tape (sticky-side up) around the area that you're going to place your crayons so you can place your crayons on the tape and move them around if needed.
Now start by squirting some glue onto your canvas on the area that you're going to place your crayons. I used a small wood chip that came with my canvas to smooth and spread the glue out a bit so it wasn't so clumpy and wouldn't ooze through the cracks of my crayons. Only put glue on small portions of the canvas so the glue doesn't dry while you set your crayons!
Once your crayons are set in place, set some weighted items (not to heavy!) on your crayons to set them better. Let the glue dry for a while (I left mine overnight).
Once dry, set up your melting space outdoors (somewhere that you can lean the canvas up against a sturdy object without the canvas leaning) or indoors with a plastic tarp, newspaper, or some trash bags. I had my canvas in our kitchen/social area leaning against a coffee table with large trash bags on the floor and draped over the coffee table so the splatter didn't ruin anything.
Now gather your hairdryer, plug it in, and start melting! It took me a moment to find the best angle for my crayons, so it may take a moment for you to get a nice downward blow going.
There you have it! This is how you do melted crayon art!
This is how mine turned out::
I actually like the melting going up rather than going down. I'm going to do a blue-tone one for my bathroom and I will post the results when I do that!
Allons-y!
